Standard or calendar update periods?

By default, quarterly periods follow the tax year: 6 April to 5 July, 6 July to 5 October, and so on. You can elect to use calendar periods instead (1 April to 30 June, and so on), which many people find easier with monthly bank statements. The deadline is the same either way.

What goes into a quarterly update?

A summary of your income and expenses for the period, sent from your software. It is not a tax return and you do not pay tax with it. Corrections can be made in a later update or in the tax return.

When do I pay tax?

Payment dates don't change with Making Tax Digital: the balancing payment is due by 31 January after the tax year, and payments on account (if you make them) by 31 January and 31 July.
